Description

I am a PhD Candidate of Marketing at Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University, Nigeria and my area of specialization is Corporate Branding. Within the realm of corporate branding, my area of sub- specialization is health branding and my PhD thesis examines the development of health branding in Nigeria from a historical institutionalism perspective, using archival research as well as case studies drawn from the public, private and traditional healthcare sectors in Nigeria.

I have a multi-disciplinary background in the medical and social sciences which informs my interdisciplinary approach to research and multi-pronged approach to teaching. My first degree is in the medical sciences and I have a Post-Graduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism as well as a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA).

My decision to pursue a PhD in management, with specialization in Marketing was borne out of my work experience prior to my doctoral studies where I observed a number of management-related problems in the various sectors I worked. One of the problems I observed was a seeming incongruity between companies’ external reputation to customers and their internal reputation to employees, which oftentimes had a negative backlash on the companies. This informed my decision to pursue a doctoral programme in Management at the Lagos Business School, Nigeria where I was awarded a scholarship to study Management.

Within the Management domain, I chose to specialize in Marketing in order to pursue the area of corporate branding which deals with the perception of organizations. For my MPhil thesis, I investigated the role the social media plays in influencing the relationship between corporate personalities of brands and customer purchases. My study was conducted in the Nigerian banking sector and I had the opportunity to present the findings of my study to academics and industry practitioners at an international conference held in the US in 2015. My doctoral thesis is inspired by my medical background and it focuses on the development of health branding in Nigeria from the period 1996 – 2018 and uses historical institutionalism as a theoretical lens. From my doctoral thesis, I have presented two papers related to health branding at the following conferences - the 2016 Academy of International Business, Sub-Saharan Chapter (AIB-SSA) Conference and the 2017 Corporate Communication International’s Conference on Corporate Communication. In addition, I have written a book chapter on health branding which examines the construct from a social constructionism lens and explores how healthcare managers can build their organizations into brands.

On the whole, my primary research interests lie in the field of marketing and I am particularly interested in corporate branding, health branding, digital marketing and institutional theory applications to marketing.

In addition to my research endeavous, I have three years teaching experience as an Adjunct Faculty at the undergraduate campus of Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos Nigeria where I teach Marketing to third year Business Administration students.
